Pak-Lite

This is a Pac-Lite, a two LED light that clips onto the end of a 9 v battery. It is a no frills, no nonsense tool, durable, reliable, and compact. I brought it on a trip camping around Iceland in the winter, followed by eastern France, Switzerland and some other places. It was soaked and exposed to both nearly scalding water in steam caves, as well as freezing temperatures and salty conditions of sailing. The battery life is extremely long. I never had to replace it during three months of traveling and frequent use. It has a three position toggle switch as its sole control: off, high, low. It can however be bumped accidentally and turn on inside a bag. I did not have the neoprene head strap for it, but I would recommend it. I frequently tucked it under the side of a bandana, or even held it in my mouth a few times while working with both hands. It is not a spot light, so do not expect it to light up a moose on the far bank of a river, but it is an excellent task light to have on hand or keep in a survival kit.

  1. Is this the light Ben Henry worked on? Where can someone get a light like this? Is it an expensive investment?

I've been looking into getting a headlamp of some sort and am wondering if I should just get a cheap one at Target or get a better quality one. Since I don't really know if it matters... What's your suggestion? :)

  2. Yeah, I believe he and his brother developed it. You can buy them at their site http://www.9voltlight.com
the super version runs around $25 and the headband is $8, so $32 makes a pretty affordable headlamp that will last through any conditions. They also come with the battery which is nice.
I recommend getting a little bit better lamp than the generic Wall Mart or target models. My dad always gets those, and I've found that you pay a few dollars less for something with less refined usability, and it falls apart quicker.

  3. It's an amazing light - I think my wife and I have three of them, and they always get used. Great for camping, emergency kits, cars, whatever. Sticking this in your pocket is much more comfortable than any other light I've come across that is anywhere near as powerful.
